Assessment

HOPE Consulting uses a team of experts with broad experience in management and supervisory positions at a large variety of industries including research labs, commercial nuclear energy, oil & gas, mining, construction, and healthcare. Our approach has been applied for a variety of customers and, among other things, we assess the following key areas: 

  • The current safety culture as identified through observed behaviors during work activities  

  • Application of standards and expectations in various settings 

  • Effectiveness of current performance assessment activities  

  • An evaluation of undesirable events over the past 2 years 

  • Use of performance indicators  

  • Practices used in performance assessment and trending   

  • Effectiveness of benchmarking activities 

  • Previously completed training 

  • Use of site and industry operating experience (a.k.a. lessons to be learned – LTBL) 

  • Use of observation and coaching process results  

  • Challenges to reporting of events or near misses that impede performance improvement 

  • Use of effectiveness reviews for completed actions  

  • Thoroughness of problem analysis  

  • Effectiveness of corrective action development and subsequent implementation  

Upon conclusion of the assessment, the product, a report, will provide baseline information to identify what your organization is doing well, areas for improvement, make recommendations and identify ways to assess progress for improved performance to achieve High Reliability Operations (HRO). The benefits of conducting this baseline assessment are to 1) customize any training, communications, and management approaches to close identified gaps and 2) to use measures to determine improvement from performance initiatives put in place after the assessment.

The length of assessments is dependent on the assessed organization's size and is typically 1 or 2 weeks. We offer our clients an opportunity to participate as members of the assessment team to learn strong assessment techniques so that the client can become future self-assessing.

Collaboration

Our collaborative approach has been applied to a variety of customers.

When we collaborate with your management team, we unpack your goals for your organization while providing mentoring based on best practices that we have seen at other High Reliability Organizations.

The of collaboration and mentoring is to create a dynamic plan or road map to accomplish desired goals and outcomes. We help management understand their roles and responsibilities for a sustainable approach and not just a “new initiative” that can “die on the vine”.

We typically start this process at the top of the organization’s management team and work our way down to the first line supervisor position.

This collaboration and mentoring process lasts as long as desired as we are here to “teach you how to fish” and not to overstay as we keep your business acumen goals in mind.

Our training approach has been applied to a variety of customers. When we assist clients in their measuring of performance, based on best practices that we have seen at other High Reliability Organizations.

When establishing a measures, such as “Key Performance Indicators”, many clients make the mistake of creating too many from areas that are overly complex or burdensome to retrieve. The thought appears to be “the more the better” when we have found that “less can be more”. We help management identify what’s the most important measures that will provide them with specific indicators of productivity and safety in the areas of high reliability operations.

We have experience in creating these types of measures as well as the software and associated dashboards which can be used throughout the organization.

Planning

HOPE Consulting uses a team of experts with broad experience in management and supervisory positions at a large variety of industries including research labs, commercial nuclear energy, oil & gas, mining, construction, and healthcare. Our training approach has been applied to a variety of customers. When we assist clients in their planning, it is based on best practices that we have seen at other High Reliability Organizations.

When establishing a plan, we believe that it should be dynamic, meaning that it is flexible to adapt to those things that are working well and those that may not. We also believe that a “Change Management” and “Communication Plan” should be subsets within the clients’ overall plan.

We have experience in creating these types of plans as well as scripts that can be used for communications throughout the organization.

Training

HOPE Consulting offers online, scalable training as well as in-person training for a blended training approach with our partner HRT. HOPE uses a team of experts with broad experiences in management and supervisory positions at a large variety of industries including DOE National Laboratories, Department of Defense, commercial nuclear energy, chemical and petrochemical, mining, construction, and healthcare. Our collaborative approach has been applied to a variety of customers.

It is through the assessment process that we can target specific training to improve any deficiencies that we find. At HOPE, we are unlike other consulting firms in that we customize your training and not just provide something “off the shelf” to meet your needs. We understand that each client is unique based on its current culture.

Our proven training approach begins with training for the Executive management team and their direct reports who are ultimately responsible for the safe and successful accomplishment of desired goals. At this level, we help executives understand their roles and responsibilities for sustainability of all initiatives. We understand the commitment of resources that are involved in any new initiatives for enhanced performance and therefore ensure that management understands how to sustain desired outcomes.

Training typically involves more time and details at the management levels of the organization than at the workforce level (those touching the systems, equipment, processes, etc.). We also look for opportunities to include case studies based on the organization’s previous performance as well as the setup of dynamic learning stations for some hands-on, practical applications of learned concepts.
